Liens

Today's Post-Journal runs a short piece on the recent spate of lien notices sent out by the BPU to property owners. According to local law. unpaid utility bills become a lien on the property and, in some cases, can be transferred onto the property tax bill.

The Jamestown Lawyer is not certain which case BPU counsel Mr. Wright is referring to, but at one point the Jamestown Lawyer, not speaking in the third person, had an informal BPU hearing regarding this issue. The city had issued a tax certificate showing no debt and then, years later, the previous owner's lien showed up and the BPU attempted to collect.
